Update on Fire in Downtown Mayetta
08/22/2014

(KNZA)-The cause of a fire in downtown Mayetta late Thursday night remained undetermined Friday afternoon.

The fire was reported at 104 Main Street shortly after 10.

Jackson County Sheriff Tim Morse says the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s office arrived at the scene Friday. He said it was determined the fire started in the northwest portion of the building.  About 15 percent of the building was destroyed and the remainder suffered smoke damage.

The building was currently unoccupied, but had recently been used as an office and a cafe.

The Mayetta, Hoyt, Holton and Potawatomi Tribal fire departments responded to the scene along with the Jackson County Sheriff's Department and Jackson County EMS.
The fire was brought under control about an hour later.  Morse said the fire departments quick response prevented the fire from spreading to a large building to the west.

The fire remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s office and the Jackson County Sheriff’s office.
