Search For Rapist Continues; Police Chief Provides New Insight
08/14/2014

William Vogel

(KMZA)--Despite reported sightings of an accused rapist being sought by Sabetha police, none of the reports have yet led to the location, or apprehension, of 51-year-old William Vogel.

Police are continuing to ask for the public's help in locating the on-the-run Sabetha resident.

Police Chief Robert Wahwasuck has confirmed that Vogel's wanted for the rape of a juvenile that occurred in Sabetha on Sunday.

Investigators believe Vogel to be on foot, likely trying to hitchhike his way to Texas, Florida or Illinois.

A Nemaha County warrant for Vogel's arrest was issued Monday, and information regarding his whereabouts should be provided to Sabetha Police at 785-284-2158.

On Thursday, Wahwasuck issued a formal statement regarding the incident, and addresses why many answers can't immediately be made public:

In regards to the disturbing and unsettling event that occurred over the weekend here in Sabetha.

Though I cannot divulge many of the specifics, I will let it be known that mine and my fellow Officers thoughts and prayers are with those impacted by this past weekend’s events.

I realize that many of you have questions and want answer’s, I am certainly one of those individuals as well.

Unfortunately the one man who is suspected to have many of those answers currently appears to be on the run from law enforcement. I would ask that anyone who may be in contact with, or is contacted by, William Lee Vogel encourage him to turn himself in, to authorities.

The victim of this heinous crime was a juvenile and went through a very traumatic experience. Due to the juvenile involvement with this crime, the department is very limited at this time on what we may provide to the public.

I would also like to say that this is an ongoing investigation and William Lee Vogel is a suspect and remains innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

My department has been working tirelessly around the clock to find out the truth of what went on this past weekend and we will continue to do so until justice has prevailed.

Thank you,

Robert A. Wahwasuck, Chief of Police
