(KAIR)--Atchison city officials have announced plans to test a temporary traffic configuration at one of the city's intersections.
According to City Public Works and Utilities Director Justin Pregont, the city will conduct a trial for an all-way stop configuration at the intersection of Fourth Street and Park Street. He says the current configuration of using mid block pedestrian warning signs just isn't working because those signs keep getting smashed and broken to pieces.
Pregont says the signs are costly to replace and the city is searching for a more cost effective traffic control solution for the intersection.
Police Chief Mike Wilson thinks the new configuration is a good one, especially considering the amount of pedestrian traffic in the area. He says they are conducting the trial so they can better understand how it will effect the community as a whole.
The all way stop configuration will start August 4th, and will run for 90 days while the city's Police and Public Works departments evaluate traffic and public safety. Feedback from the community will also be gathered.
