Missouri Governor Orders Review of Lottery
07/25/2014

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Gov. Jay Nixon has ordered a review of the Missouri Lottery after a decline in the proceeds transferred to education.

The Missouri Lottery had record sales of nearly $1.16 billion during the 2014 budget year that ended June 30.

But the amount of money transferred to education declined to $267 million from a high mark of nearly $289 million during the 2013 budget.

Nixon said Wednesday that he has asked the Office of Administration to conduct a comprehensive review of the Lottery's ability to provide a stable funding source for public schools.

Most Lottery revenues are paid out in prizes.

About 23 percent of the proceeds were transferred to education during the last budget year. That percentage had been consistently above 25 percent during the past decade.
