(KAIR)--Rescue crews are continuing the search for a man reported to have disappeared into the Missouri River from the Amelia Earhart Bridge Sunday morning.
According to Atchison Police Chief Mike Wilson, a motorist on the bridge saw someone standing on the bridge shortly after 1:15 and notified Buchanan County authorities. Upon arrival, they discovered the victim was no longer on the bridge, and immediately started a search along the Missouri River. Atchison rescue crews joined the search soon after. Law enforcement agencies south of the river have also been notified of the situation, and are ready to assist if needed.
Crews from multiple rescue agencies launched boats into the river to assist in the search during the night, and continued to use the watercraft through the day Sunday.
Wilson says they know the victim is in the river as crews have heard him in the water.
Officials have identified him as 23-year-old Joshua Jones of Atchison.
Further updates on the search will be provided as they become available.
