Hiawatha Preparing for Phase 2 of Sewer Project

(KNZA)-- The city of Hiawatha is preparing for the next phase of the city’s sanitary sewer system improvement project.

The Hiawatha City Commission Monday evening approved a preliminary engineering report prepared by TREKK Design Group for phase 2 of the sewer project, which the engineering firm has estimated at $1.2 million.

The commission also authorized an application for a $500,000 Community Development Block grant through the Kansas Department of Commerce to help fund the project. The city plans to attend a meeting on July 22nd in Topeka to explain their phase 2 project plans and application.

The city plans to fund the remainder of the project cost, just over $742,000, through a 40-year loan from USDA Rural Development.

Phase 2, which is begin in 2015 and be completed in 2016 , will continue the replacement and rehabilitation of the identified high priority areas of the city’s sewer system.

Hiawatha is under an executive order from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment to reduce rain and groundwater from entering the city’s sewer system. A 4 phased plan has been developed to address that order.
