(KAIR)--Officials with the city of Atchison have announced that the city's Public Works Department and Utilities Department have been combined into one single department.
City Manager Trey Cocking says combining these two departments made the most sense since both do things such as going out with backhoes, digging up streets and repairing utility lines.
Cocking says the move comes after officials started to look at the city's overall organization, and realized there were a number of key people retiring in the next few years. So the merge is a result of a reorganization, to take advantage of the knowledge these people have before they retire.
The new department will be headed by current Public Works Director Justin Pregont, who has served in that capacity since September of last year. Mike Mathews, who has been the city's Utilities Director for the past nine years, will stay on with the city as a Combined Sewer Overflow Specialist and Project Manager.
