(KNZA)--A late June bid letting has been set for the Hiawatha fitness and school trail project.
The Hiawatha City Commission Monday evening authorized city staff to advertise for bids for the project, contingent on approval from the Kansas Department of Transportation.
The Commission also approved a contract with BG Consultants, of Lawrence, to provide construction administration services at a cost not to exceed $124,332. 80 percent of the cost will be reimbursable by KDOT.
Project engineer Brian Kingsley outlined a timeline for the project. Kingsley said plans are to let bids June 26th and for the commission to award a bid at their June 30th meeting. Construction would begin in July, with completion around October 1st.
The walking and biking trail will connect key elements in the eastern part of the city. The trail is to start near the Little Hands Daycare Center, proceed north past the Fisher Community Center, and loop around the middle and high schools.
The estimated $1.4 million project is primarily being funded through state and federal grant funds.
