(KTNC) - The Omaha Public Power District Board of Directors has approved a motion to move forward with construction of a new high-voltage transmission line. The Midwest Transmission Project is a 180-mile long transmission line that will eventually run from a sub-station at OPPD’s Nebraska City Station to a sub-station near Sibley, Missouri.
OPPD is managing the Nebraska portion of the project and Kansas City Power and Light is managing the Missouri portion.
The measure the OPPD Board approved at its May meeting allows the district to negotiate with property owners beginning this summer to acquire voluntary easements for the line. Approximately 150 easements will be needed for the Nebraska portion of the project, which will be 45-miles in length. The easements are located in Otoe, Nemaha and Richardson Counties.
Construction on the transmission line is to begin next summer.
OPPD has scheduled three public meeting with property owners impacted by the project. Utility representatives will answer questions about the project, provide an update on its status, and give information regarding the easement acquisition process.
Meetings are scheduled next week; Monday at the Lied Lodge and Conference Center in Nebraska City; Tuesday at the Falls City Middle School Gymnasium; and Thursday at the Nemaha County Fairgrounds 4H Building in Auburn. All three meetings will begin at 6:00 p.m. and conclude at around 8:00 p.m.
