(KMZA)--The bid for a drainage improvement project on U.S. 36 Highway in Seneca has been rejected and the city plans to seek additional grant funding for the project.
The low bid for the project of $1.3 million was about $163,000 over the engineer’s estimate.
The City Council decided at their April 16th meeting to offer to pay 25 percent of the bid overage. The Kansas Department of Transportation had asked the city to cover the entire overrun. However, City Administrator Matt Rehder said KDOT informed the city the following day that April 17th was the deadline to either accept or reject the bid. He said KDOT will “ bank” the grant money the city received for the project and the city plans to apply for additional funding by May 9th. He says the city should learn in August or September if they receive the additional grant funding.
The city was awarded a $700,000 geometric improvement grant from KDOT last year for the project. The city was to provide a 25 percent match.
