(KLZA) -- Highway 75 through Auburn re-opened to traffic Monday easing problems, especially with semi-trucks that missed or did not pay attention to the detour signs. The traffic light at the intersection of Highways 75 and 136 is flashing yellow for north-south traffic currently and of course 136 remains closed through downtown Auburn.
During a weekly update from Nebraska Department of Road Project Manager Mike Habegger the project is going well. Unfortunately good weather for road projects is not good for area farmers. Habegger said the lack of rain has helped the project stay on track, noting that even the threat of rain could keep Hawkins Construction from scheduling cement pours.
Parking areas were being paved Tuesday from J to H Streets. The only real slow down for the paving, is due to some awnings in front of businesses sticking out further than was anticipated. It will mean extra hand-pouring of cement for sidewalks.
Habegger believes the parking areas will be completed by Thursday and sidewalks will be poured next. If all continues to go well Highway 136 from K Street to H Street could be opened to local traffic early next week in the downtown area.
The next phases 2 & 3 will mean one-lane traffic in those areas, from H to F Streets and from K Street to Irvin.
Semi-trucks are banned from traveling Highway 136 in Auburn until the project is completed in November.
One concern noted by Mayor Scott Kudrna and Chamber Manager Suzie Adams Tuesday, was the speed of traffic going north and south on Highway 75 now that the intersection with Highway 136 has re-opened.
