04/14/2014

(KNZA)--A former school in the Doniphan County community of Elwood may get historic status.

The Kansas Historic Sites Board of Review will consider the nomination of the Lincoln School, located at 410 North 9th Street, to the National Register of Historic Places and Register of Historic Kansas Places when they meet May 3rd.

It served as a school for black students from 1935 until 1954 when a U.S. Supreme Court decision ended segregation.

The building, which is owned by Riverside USD 114, is now leased to the Doniphan County Council on Aging for use as a senior citizens center.  It also serves as a branch library.
