(KMZA)--An alert Seneca resident stopped a crime in progress and helped lead authorities to a 55-year-old Lawrence man believed to have been the culprit.
Seneca Police Chief Brent Schulte says the case developed Tuesday night shortly before 10:00 at a local business.
The resident was driving by and noticed a vehicle backed up to a $3,000 trailer. Suspecting that it might be a theft attempt, the resident pulled into the parking lot and was able to write down the suspect vehicle's license plate just as the vehicle sped off.
A cut padlock was found at the scene.
The information was turned over to police who located the suspect vehicle north of Beattie.
Police identified the driver as Lawrence resident James Boyd, who was found to be in possession of a set of bolt cutters.
He was not arrested at the scene and allowed to leave. However, police plan to charge him with attempted felony theft and criminal damage to property, with that information now forwarded to the Nemaha County Attorney.
