(KAIR)--Local high school students saw first hand how government works during the annual celebration of Government Day in Atchison County.
Over fifty students from Atchison High School and Maur Hill-Mount Academy gathered at the Atchison County Courthouse Tuesday afternoon to learn how government works in face to face setting with local officials. County Commission Chair Jeff Schuele says that overall, the event went very well. Democratic State Representative Jerry Henry even stopped in to speak, taking time to share inspiring quotes from Abraham Lincoln.
The speeches were followed by hands on sessions with officials. Students were able to break up into groups and follow elected officials or Department Heads around to learn more about their job. Schuele says the Atchison County Jail was the most popular choice.
Schuele says that most people don't know the role or function of the local government, and this event does quite a bit to show how important it really is.
The first Atchison County Government Day took place fifty years ago.
