(KNZA)--A local school district's agricultural efforts earns them a place among eight schools across the state chosen by the Kansas Department of Agriculture to each receive $12,500.
The Farm to School Pilot Sub-grants are used to establish or expand upon an agriculture education, student managed food production system to service a minimum of two locally produced food items in the school cafeteria any five months during the school years 2014-2015 and 2015-2016.
At Doniphan West, that's accomplished through the use of an already established greenhouse, overseen by agricultural education students.
The grant monies received by the school will be used to expand and update the greenhouse operation while incorporating an aquaponics system.
Doniphan West, along with the other selected schools, will also be responsible for the creation, and implementation, of a farm to school educational kit and campaign for elementary and middle school students.
Additionally, all grant-awarded schools will be responsible for hosting a Good Agricultural Practices workshop in their local community.
