Manhole Inspections, Phase 2 Funding, Focus in Hiawatha
04/01/2014

(KNZA)--The Hiawatha City Commission is making preparations for the next phase of improvements to the city’s sanitary sewer system while moving forward with completion of the manhole inspections for the 1st phase.

The Commission Monday evening gave Galen Lay with TREKK Design approval to prepare a preliminary engineering report needed to apply for a Community Development Block grant this fall for phase 2 of the project.  Lay said the report could also be used to apply for a grant and/or loan through USDA Rural Development.

The Commission also gave Lay approval to complete the manhole inspections for the 1st phase of the project.  Lay said there are 60 manholes that haven’t been inspected or located with GPS equipment.  In addition, he said 51 other manholes need to be GPS located so a current map can be prepared of the city’s sanitary sewer system.  Lay will prepare an abbreviated report on the manhole inspections to be included with the preliminary engineering report.

The work will be done at a total cost of $38,596.

Hiawatha is under an executive order from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment to reduce rain and groundwater from entering the city sanitary sewer system.
