(KAIR)--Two Atchison residents are behind bars after a short vehicle chase that took place just before 4:00 Thursday morning.
According to Atchison County Sheriff Jack Laurie, his office received a call regarding a Grey Chevy Blazer driving around and looking into an auto impound lot located at the 2200-block of Pacific. Sheriff's Deputies were out of the area at the time, and asked the Atchison Police Department to respond until they could arrive.
When police arrived on the scene, the Blazer quickly left the area and headed west on US 73 Highway. Officials attempted to pull over the vehicle, but it suddenly went northbound to 286 before going northbound on Kingman Road.
Deputies and Police officers followed the vehicle into Doniphan County where it made a wrong turn down a dead end road. It successfully turned around, and got by a deputy, but could not pass the two police cars blocking the narrow road.
Officers took the driver, 43-year-old Steven Bowen and his passenger, 35-year-old Melissa Stepp into custody at the scene. Bown is facing several charges including fleeing a law enforcement officer, driving while suspended, and several other traffic related charges. Stepp is facing one count of marijuana possession, after a small amount of the drug was found on her during the arrest.
