(KNZA)--The Hiawatha City Commission Monday evening denied a pair of requests for additional funding from contractors on the city’s current sewer improvement project.
Project Manager Galen Lay with TREKK Design Group met with the commission to discuss the change order requests.
Engemann Drainage Company, of Troy, requested an additional $36,000 for costs incurred due to difficulties caused by overhead utilities. Roger Engemann told the commission his company had to rent specialized equipment in order to work around utility lines that were not moved. Engemann said he was told during the pre-bid conference that the utilities would be moved and not be a problem. However, Commissioner Steffen Shamburg pointed out that any problem with utilities should have been addressed by the commission before any extra money was spent on equipment.
The commission also turned down a request from Utility Solutions, of Bashor, for an additional nearly $17,000 to cover the costs of liners that were inserted in two pipelines even though it wasn’t called for on the plans. However, the commission indicated they would be open to revisiting the request in the future since the liners were to be included in the next phase of work.
The commission did approve a change order request from Utility Solutions for nearly 88-hundred for cleanup items on their contract.
