Drones Come To Jackson Heights

(KNZA)--Drones come to Jackson County, but they're not being used by government or law enforcement agencies. Instead, the drones in question are being used as a learning tool for high school students at Jackson Heights.

Technology director Vern Andrews says two drones were purchased and are currently in use by the agriculture students, overseen by instructor Paul Lierz.

Andrews says the idea to utilize the drones stemmed from an article he read in a magazine that explained how they are being used in agricultural studies. Following a discussion with Lierz about the technology, the decision to make the purchase was reached.

The most used of the two drones was purchased for a cost of around $600, while the installed Go Pro camera was an additional $500. The second drone was purchased for under $300 and can be flown by using an ipad or an iphone.

Students have used the drone technology to examine crops from above, and have also displayed the technology during the season's football games.

Andrews says spectators can expect that to continue during basketball season.
