(KTNC) - Customers of the Holt County Public Water Supply District will see their water rates increase next year after Mound City Aldermen approved a five-percent rate increase for all tiers of the Water Supply District during their October meeting.
The action came after the council reviewed a water rate analysis. That analysis indicated an increase is needed due to both an increase in costs to operate the water plant and a decline in water sales.
The base charge and first tier rate – up to 8,000 gallons – will not change for city and out-of-town users.
The rate analysis indicated an increase of 15-percent was needed for the Public Water Supply District, partly due to debt that is to be paid in full by the end of the 2014-2015 fiscal year.
The council considered spreading the debt expense over several more years, which would lower the rate. They approved the five-percent increase after lengthy discussion. The current water rate has been in place for two years. The new rates are effective on January 1.
The council also reviewed the sewer rate analysis, which indicated that current rates are sufficient to support the costs to operate the sewer plant. Aldermen voted to leave the current sewer rates unchanged. Those rates are a $5.40 base charge plus $3.84 per one thousand gallons of water used.
