(KAIR)--The Atchison County Lake has been in the county's possession for over 83 years, but that may soon change.
Atchison county commissioner Jeff Schuele says the county isn't actively shopping the lake, but were approached by an outside party interested in buying it. He says all they are doing at this point is seeking public input on what direction they should go, so no sale is imminent at this time.
Attendence at the lake has declined at recent years. Schuele says that the county is responsible for upkeep on the lakefront, and since they are not receiving any revenue from the lake, are losing money.
The county is not planning on taking any action as of yet, but the commission will hold a public hearing on October 22nd at 2:00 in the afternoon to gauge public interest in selling the lake. Schuele does say that the county could hold onto the property and perhaps re-purpose it, depending on what the public wants.
