(KAIR)--The Kansas Department of Transportation has announced that commuters should expect significant delays as preparations are made to demolish the old US 59 Amelia Earhart Memorial Bridge.
Starting today ( Monday ), the right westbound lane of the new Amelia Earhart Memorial Bridge will be closed 24 hours a day through Wednesday, October 2nd.
Drivers should expect minor delays, and will be directed through the work zone with signage and cones.
The Kansas Department of Transportation urges all motorists to obey all signs, and exercise caution as they move through the work zone.
The city of Atchison has also posted a warning for boat owners regarding bridge demolition. If you plan on putting your boat in the Missouri River in the coming weeks, please pay attention to the demolition schedule for the old bridge. During the demolition you will not be able to approach the bridge. After the demolition, you may not be able to pass through the location of the old bridge for up to 24 hours. If you put in north of the bridge and travel south the morning of an implosion, you may not be able to travel back north for up to 24 hours! Please plan ahead.
