(KAIR)--There are many reasons why animals can be mistreated and unfortunately, there are also many ways they can be abused. According to Atchison Police Chief Mike Wilson, his department has investigated 15 cases of animal cruelty this year alone, with the two most recent cases taking place this month. Wilson says that the first case actually took place outside of the city. A 32 year old Atchison man had been keeping a dog in a rural area outside of the city limits. The animal wandered into the city and at that point, it became an issue for the Atchison Police Department. It was determined that the animal had gone long periods of time without adequate food and water and had some pretty serious medial issues.
The second case also involved dogs, with the owner claiming that the animal was born with the scabs on his body and she had no idea that the animal was such in bad shape. The situation was brought to the attention of officials by a third party, who had seen the puppy and alerted police. When officers arrived at the home, they discovered three more dogs in comparable conditions. The owner, a 44 year old Atchison woman, was also issued a notice to appear in court for cruelty to animals.
Wilson further states that the kinds of mistreatment they see most often are animals locked in cars in either extreme heat or cold as well as animals being completely abandoned.
