(KTNC) - The Falls City School District will consider applying for a grant to fund an early childhood program for at-risk children.
During his report to the school board this month, Superintendent Tim Heckenlively said the state of Nebraska was making more dollars available for high-quality early childhood programs serving at-risk infants, toddlers, and their families.
As a result of the extra funding, he said District 56 would have a chance to apply for a “Sixpence” grant, which would allow the district to offer services that are needed in this area. (play audio :48 “looking strongly at.”)
Letters of intent to apply for a grant are due by August 30, and the grants require matching funds that include an in-kind match of dollars already funding early childhood services within the school district.
According to a report released last winter by First Five Nebraska, Richardson County has the highest percentage of any county in the state of children zero to five years of age at risk of failing in school. Based on U.S. Census data, First Five Nebraska says 85-percent of Richardson County children fall into the at-risk category.
The numbers of children considered at-risk are significantly lower in neighboring counties – 39-percent in Johnson County, 36-percent in Nemaha County, and 19-percent in Pawnee County.
