( KNZA )--Public health alerts have been issued for three area northeast Kansas lakes due to the presence of toxic blue-green algae.
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment said Thursday that the Hiawatha City Lake and Atchison’s Warnock Lake are currently under a “ warning” status due to the presence of high levels of toxic blue-green algae. A public health warning indicates that water conditions are unsafe and direct water contact is prohibited.
The Atchison County Lake has been placed under an “ advisory” status.
Under an advisory, KDHE says water activities like boating and fishing may be safe. However, direct contact with the water is strongly discouraged for people, pets and livestock.
Fish at the lakes should be cleaned and rinsed with clean water, and only the fillet portion consumed.
KDHE will continue to monitor the lakes and will provide updates as conditions warrant.
