( KNZA )--More than 4-thousand linear feet of sewer line will be replaced in six areas of Hiawatha.
The Hiawatha City Commission Monday evening accepted the low bid from Roger Engemann Drainage Company of Troy for the project at a total cost of $376,617.
The bid was among three received and was more than $74,000 under the engineer’s estimate.
City Administrator Lynne Ladner says the work completes the 1st phase of improvements to the city’s sanitary sewer system. The city has developed a multiple phase plan to address an executive order from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment to eliminate rain and ground water from entering the sewer system.
On the recommendation of Police Chief John Defore, the commission accepted a bid from Rainbow Communications for a new phone system for the police department at a total cost of $15,684. The bid includes 10 phones, a call logger and server.
Funding will come through a loan and grant awarded to the city from USDA Rural Development for the purchase of public safety equipment.
And the commission accepted a bid from J & B Contractors of Hiawatha for the repair of the intersection of Red Hawk and Morrill Avenue. More than 26-hundred square feet of street will be replaced along with 54 feet of curb and gutter for a cost of $15,595.
