Shopteese Earns Probation In Murder Case

(KNZA)--Eighteen months of supervised probation.

That's the sentence handed down Friday in a Jackson County courtroom for the 22-year-old woman accused of playing a role in the January shooting death of a Mayetta man.

Jackson County Attorney Shawna Miller says Desiree Shopteese, of Topeka, was first sentenced to eight months in prison, but that was suspended, contingent on whether or not she successfully completes her probation period.

Originally charged with 2nd degree murder in the death of Kevin Stanley, Shopteese last month pled guilty to a lesser charge of obstruction of apprehension, commonly known as aiding a felon.

She was located by authorities in January hiding in the trunk of a car, along with accused murderer Lloyd Wabaunsee, in Iowa, about week following the fatal shooting of Kevin Stanley.

Wabaunsee, of Mayetta, is charged with 2nd degree murder and will return to court June 7th.

Also scheduled to appear at that time is Topeka resident Stephen Eastman, charged with aiding or abetting murder in the 2nd degree, obstructing apprehension or prosecution, and interfering with law enforcement official duty. Authorities say he drove Wabaunsee and Shopteese to and from the Mayetta home of Stanley at the time of the murder.

Two others are also involved in the case.

29-year-old Aaron Lofton, said to have been driving the car in Iowa at the time Wabaunsee and Shopteese were located, entered a no contest plea earlier this month for attempting to obstruct the apprehension or prosecution of a felon. Terms of the plea mean Lofton cannot seek probation. He will be sentenced June 13th.

With Lofton was a passenger, 36-year-old Denison resident Rachel Hudson. In March, she pled guilty to aiding a felon, and was sentenced to probation, and 60 days in jail.
