( KNZA )--The city of Hiawatha is establishing a cost-share program for the demolition of unsafe or derelict structures in the city.
The city commission Monday evening approved a resolution designating a policy for the program, which will provide reimbursement for 50 percent of the cost paid by the owner up to 45-hundred dollars.
Hiawatha already has a similar cost-share program available for the replacement of sidewalks, curbs and gutters.
The new cost-share program will begin on August 1st of this year and continue until funds are depleted or December 31st
The city has set aside $10,000 for the program this year, and may allocate additional funding to the program after August 1st from any funds left over for those budgeted for curb and gutter and sidewalk projects.
Funds will be available on a first come, first serve basis.
In other business, an ordinance was approved amending the city code to allow for a local special event cereal malt beverage permit.
The permit will be available from the city clerk for a fee of $25. In addition, a $25 fee will have to remitted to the Kansas Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control.
