(KNZA)--A Community Garden is now in place in the Doniphan County community of Highland.
The garden is made possiible, in part, as garden organizers receive a $2,115 grant awarded through the Kansas Community Gardens Project, a joint initiative of the Kansas Health Foundation and K-State Research and Extension.
Highland residents Becky Gilmore and Wendy Simmons are both employed by the Northeast Kansas Multi-County Health Department.
Gilmore says they worked to apply for the grant, as well as to arrange and partnership with the Doniphan West FFA(Play Audio)
The garden, located at 101 South Kansas in Highland and consisting of two separate plots, is one of 35 Kansas community garden projects to receive the grant funding, which will, in Highland's case, support the goal of bringing fresh produce to the community(Play Audio)
Also assisting with oversight of the garden will be the Doniphan County Extension Office, as well as the Highland Cloverpatch 4-H Club.
At the same time, volunteers from the public are also being sought for assistance(Play Audio)
Monetary donations, for the purchase of seeds and plants, not covered by the grant, are also being accepted, and can be sent to the Doniphan West High School, in care of the Doniphan West FFA Garden Funds.
