(KAIR) -- During part of Monday’s lengthy Atchison County Commissioner meeting, a concerned citizen asked Commissioners if they can help halt progress on the construction of a cell phone tower near their property.
Phyllis Schwarzer lives south of Atchison along U.S. 59 highway and crews from Verizon wireless have made efforts to mark a location, as well as requests to the township to have a gravel road to the cell site.
Schwarzer is concerned about the impact a nearby cell tower will have on her family.

County Counselor Pat Henderson said, legally, the county can’t do anything to prevent Verizon from moving forward with the project.

Schwarzer said Verizon first started negotiating with her neighbor’s property three years ago and it was only recently that activity has picked up.
Both Commissioners Pohl and Bodenhausen said they have had cell tower reps come on or near their property as far back as eight years ago, but nothing has been done so far.
Commissioners suggested talking to both legal counsel and Verizon to seek a compromise.
