( KNZA )-Doniphan County Commissioners discussed the improvement of a portion of Mineral Point Road between 180th and 190th Roads with the county’s road foremen this week.
Foreman Gregg Vertin said when the roadway, located south of Troy, was constructed in 1938 it was 40 feet. However, the Kansas Department of Transportation in 1954 designated the road as a Federal Aid System route, expanding the roadway to 80 feet. The roadway was only expanded on paper but not physically widened.
The Doniphan County Rural Electric Coop Association in 1938 was granted permission to place utility poles in the right-of-way of the 40 foot roadway. However, when the road was re-designated in 1954, the poles were not relocated.
Commissioners were told in order to locate the road where it legally should be, the utility poles and road bed will need to be moved to the west to allow for proper drainage.
Following discussion, the commission voted to have the county attorney send a letter to the Electric Cooperative requesting that they relocate their utility poles to the county road right-of-way based on an 80 foot road. The county will have to pay the cost of the relocation, estimated at about $30,000.
