(KNZA)--Although the apparent scam attempt happened outside the local area, Westar Energy officials are warning that it could happen anywhere.
According to the energy company, a man claiming to be a Westar Energy employee has been knocking on doors in the Derby area, saying that he is performing home electricity audits.
Westar says he is not an employee, and no information should be provided to anyone making such claims.
All company employees carry official identification, and wear clothing bearing the Westar Energy logo.
Also, if someone claims to work for Westar, but refuses to show identification, local law enforcement should be notified immediately.
Westar says any suspicious visits can also be verified with the company at 800-383-1183.
