(KAIR) -- A discovery of a bloodied and malnourished puppy in an Atchison yard leads to a more grisly discovery inside the residence and a cruelty of animals’ citation for an Atchison man.
Atchison Police Chief Mike Wilson says the discovery was made when Atchison County Undersheriff Joe Butner was off-duty, traveling down a street Saturday afternoon.

Wilson says when an officer arrived and entered the mobile home; they discovered a kennel crate filled with blood and around two inches of feces.
The officer also discovered a large dead lizard in its cage, allegedly not given the proper amount of heat in the home to survive.
While photos have been deemed too graphic to share, Wilson says this is among the more horrific animal cruelty cases the department has worked.
The puppy was taken to the Atchison Humane Society and subsequently to a local vet for treatment.
Wilson says this is the fourth animal cruelty case the department has worked since the beginning of the year.
Johnson will tentatively make his first appearance in municipal court on April 24th.
