Atchison Elks Hoop Shooter’s Family Finds Success
03/21/2013

(KAIR) -- Every year, the Elks lodges around the nation sponsor hoop shoots for children ages eight through 13.

However, the Atchison Elk’s lodge has produced a successful hoop shooter in the past couple of years.

Ten year-old Abagail Ostenson was able to advance to regionals in Colorado for the past two years representing the local lodge.

In 2012, she won the regional competition and advanced to the national contest in Springfield, Massachusetts, home of the Basketball Hall of Fame.

The Ostenson’s are from Topeka, but chose the Atchison lodge after their local lodge closed.

Abagael’s father, John, says it’s actually been a family affair of free throw shooting for the past several years.

Lydia Ostenson says lots of practice is required for the event.

The Elks Hoop Shoot was established in 1972 and among the winners included Chris Mullin, who went on to become a Hall of Famer and have a career free throw percentage of nearly 87 percent.

Abagael hopes to be able to eventually take home the national crown and have her name enshrined within a wing of the Basketball Hall of Fame, where all the names of the past hoop shoot champions are.
