( KNZA )-- The Hiawatha School District will offer driver’s education locally again.
The school board voted Monday evening to re-instate driver’s education in the district this summer pending the hiring of a certified instructor.
Superintendent Penny Hargrove said thirty-two students have expressed an interest in taking the class The fee for the class will be $230 per student.
For the past several years, students in the Hiawatha school district have taken driver’s education through the Atchison-based Northeast Kansas Driving School.
In other business, the board approved fees for next school year. Among other things, lunch prices will increase10 cents. Textbook fees will remain the same.
The board approved a revised three-year facilities improvement plan for 2013-2015 and authorized the superintendent to seek bids for the projects planned this summer, which are estimated at more than $240,000.
And the board accepted the retirement resignation of longtime Hiawatha High School family and consumer science teacher Janet Vaughn, effective at the end of the school year. Vaughn has taught for 37 years—including 34 years with the Hiawatha school district.
