(KAIR) -- For the first time in over a decade, a welfare fraud case is being prosecuted in Atchison County and more could be on the way.
It was just in December that Atchison County Attorney Gerald Kuckelman voiced his desire, when meeting with officials from the Kansas Department of Children and Families, to prosecute such cases(Play Audio)
The state agency responded in February by sending Kuckelman his first case.
Atchison resident Mia McKelvey has been charged with allegedly defrauding the state of just over 10-thousand-dollars from November 2009 through July 2012.
She's set to appear in an Atchison County Courtroom on March 11th.
Kuckelman says he’s also received a second case from the state and it’s currently under review.
He adds that since the December visit by the officials, he's met with them several times and anticipates more cases in the coming months.
