Due to the heavy snowfall, the Jackson County Sheriff's Office is implementing an Emergency Accident Reporting Plan, effective at midnight tonight. Drivers involved in non-injury collisions outside of the city limits, but within Jackson County are asked to exchange driver’s information, insurance and tag information at the scene and immediately contact the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office @ (785).364-2251 and provide that information to the Communications Officer along with the accident location and a contact phone # as long as:
No one is injured
The collision was not a hit-and-run accident
No alcohol or drugs were involved
All-vehicles involved would be drivable if they were not stuck in snow
If the above criteria is met, you are advised to then immediately move your vehicle from any road hazard conditions or locations to prevent further accidents from occurring. Otherwise, leave your flashers on and do not attempt to push or pull your vehicle out of the ditch until weather conditions have improved. Seek a warm environment as soon as possible. A Deputy will contact you later to take an accident report (if necessary).
All other accidents of a more serious nature should immediately be reported to (785) 364-2251 or 911 and Emergency Crews will be dispatched immediately.
We strongly discourage the use of personal vehicles being used to remove vehicles from the highways during adverse weather due to slick conditions and poor visibility. For your safety, please call a tow truck or wait until the roadways are treated and cleared.
