(MSC News)--Preparations for the expected winter storm continue to be made across the region, including communities in the local area.
Among them is the City of Horton, where proactive steps have been taken to make certain that crews are ready when the snow comes down.
Rex West, Director of Streets and Public Utilities, outlined plans to the Horton City Commission Monday, saying arrangments have been made for crew members, who live outside the city limits, to stay at the Horton Guest House so long as the storm requires.
Meanwhile, in Atchison County, crews are also gearing up for the battle.
Road and Bridge Supervisor Matt Dorssom says the plan is to begin treatment of the roads as soon as snow begins to fall.
Predictions show that, at it's worst, the storm will make driving treacherous. Brown County Sheriff John Merchant says if travel is necessary, drivers should be prepared for the weather.
The heaviest snow is expected between 6 am to 4 pm, Thursday. East winds of 15 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 30, are expected, as well as the possibility of sleet.
According to the latest from the National Weather Service, northern portions of the MSC News coverage area, including Brown and Nemaha Counties, will likely see little to no snow accumulation by 6:00 Thursday morning. However, that will be deceptive, with snow to pick up later in the morning, into the afternoon, with snowfall rates of 2 inches per hour at times.
Because of the predicted storm, emergency snow routes will be be in effect in Seneca once the snow starts and until streets can be cleared. That means there will be no parking allowed on those routes.
The City of Hiawatha has implemented a similar plan, reminding motorists to also make sure their vehicles are moved by the end of business today.
