( KNZA )-The Holton/Jackson County Chamber of Commerce is requesting financial assistance from the county for an electronic billboard sign located at the junction of Highways 75 and 16 in Holton.
Chamber President Jeff Miller told Jackson County Commissioners Tuesday that they are having financial difficulties, and asked for $10,000 in funding from the county to help make the two payments on the sign.
Commissioner Janet Zwonitzer discussed the advertisements on the sign and questioned why advertising was not paying for it.
Chamber Director Jamie Claycamp said regulations state that each screen needs to be displayed for 8 seconds and there can’t be movement that may district drivers. The sign sets on Holton City property, and Claycamp said the regulations are different from other electric signs because it isn’t located on the business’s property.
Later in the meeting, Commission Chairman Ed Kathrens suggested using liquor tax money to help the Chamber if it was agreed they would advertise “ Drug and Alcohol Prevention” perpetually on the sign. The other commissioners agreed with the suggestion.
The commission will ask County Counselor Alex Morrissey if that would meet the requirements for use of the Alcohol Prevention funds.
Last year, the commission helped out with the sign with a payment of nearly 59-hundred dollars.
