(KAIR) -- As President Barack Obama makes plans for a his second inauguration – an unusual twist came into play – January 20th– Inauguration Day falls on a Sunday so the big official events are naturally being moved to Monday.
This same event occurred in 1849 when incoming President Zachary Taylor put off his swearing in ceremony for 24 hours – opening the door for a day of fame or infamy depending on how you look at it – for David Rice Atchison to become President for a Day since he was Senate President Pro Tempore.
David Rice Atchison’s brush with the Presidency is just one of the reasons our current President is taking no chances and on Sunday will be sworn in as President on the proper day and then will be sworn in again during the big public events on Monday.
CNN also noticed this unusual parallel and will profile the David Rice Atchison World’s Smallest “unofficial” Presidential Library in Atchison, during their pre-inauguration coverage. The piece is set to be part of Candy Crowley’s Sunday broadcast and will likely air shortly before President Obama’s Sunday oath of office at 10:55 central.
Atchison’s Presidential Library is part of the Atchison County Historical Society Museum in the Santa Fe Depot featuring the story and artifacts of David Rice Atchison.
Filming in the Museum of the Smallest Presidential Library took place Friday with producers from two CNN segments working on what they called “an interesting…and fun note to end the show on.”
The David Rice Atchison World’s smallest “unofficial” Presidential Library premiered in 2006 with the exhibit featuring Congressional Printings of Atchison’s Senate career, books that include his career and items that connect to the community’s other Presidential visitors and the Presidency in general.
