Decision on Future of B&B School Expected in March

( KMZA )--Input will be sought on the future of the B &B Junior-Senior High School in Baileyville with the Nemaha Central USD 115 board of education expected to make a decision in March.

The board held a work session last week to discuss the future of the school.

Three options are being looked at. Option 1 is for grades pre-kindergarten through 5th to attend school at Seneca and 6th through 8th grade at Baileyville. Option 2 is to close the B &B facility with all students attending facilities in Seneca. Option 3 is to transition over time with the B & B Junior High closing followed by the B & B high school.

Discussion was held on how each option would effect the financial gap in the budget in two years.

A report was made about the recent visits that the administration made to stand-alone middle schools in Kansas to see how they operate and how it would look in Nemaha Central.

Information was shared on enrollments numbers, costs associated with each building, and a possible schedule for a middle school with some additional exploratory classes.

Superintendent Darrel Kohlman said the next step in the process will be gathering input from teachers, students, parents and patrons. He said that will include community meetings. Kohlman said the timeline is for the meetings to take place between the end of January and the end of February with no decision being made until March.
