Fire Destroys Pawnee City Home
01/15/2013

(KTNC) -  A Pawnee City home is a total loss as the result of a fire early Monday morning.
The Pawnee City Fire Department was alerted to the fire at 623 7th Street – one block from the Fire Station – shortly before five o’clock Monday morning.
According to Pawnee City Fire Chief John Vetrovsky, Sheldon Patterson was renting the home, which was owned by Jerry Graham.
Vetrovsky says Patterson and his teenage stepson were sleeping in upstairs bedrooms, when Sheldon woke at about 4:30 a.m. and smelled smoke.  Sheldon tried to escape out the bedroom door, but was met by smoke and flames.  Vetrovsky says Sheldon and Sam were able escape the fire by jumping from a second floor balcony.
Firefighters from Pawnee City and Table Rock were on scene from just before 5:00 a.m. until about noon, and Vetrovsky says they returned to the home at about 4:00 p.m. to put out hot spots.
The cause of the fire, Vetrovsky says, was a wood stove on the main floor of the home.  He says other than a few items that were able to be salvaged the home is a total loss.
