Hollens New Falls City School Board President
01/15/2013

The Falls City Board of Education unanimously elected a new president and vice-president for the next year during Monday’s meeting.  Board members by acclamation approved the nomination of Scott Hollens as board president and John Martin as vice president.
Hollens had been vice president for the past year.  He succeeds Scott Huppert as board president.
Board committee assignments were left unchanged from last year.  The board designated the Falls City Journal as the District’s Newspaper of Record; Diann Schawang as Recording Secretary; Superintendent Tim Heckenlively as Board Secretary; and Eva Stark as the District Treasurer.
In other action Monday night, the board approved the final reading on a board policy pertaining to the physical restraint and seclusion of students.
The board left the incentive rate for new teachers hired for the 2013-2014 school year at $2,000.  That’s the same rate as last year.  Heckenlively said it’s a nice incentive for new teachers – who may move to Falls City in the summer, but not receive their first paycheck until the middle of September.
The board also approved this summer’s project list as presented.
Heckenlively informed the board that the school’s Lunch Fund ran a sizable deficit in December, with expenses outpacing income by $8,800.  He attributed the disparity to the higher cost of food and milk, along with new guidelines that require school meals to include more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.  He said income typically ebbs in December and increases in January, but if income doesn’t increase enough the board may have to make adjustments before the year is out.
