College Tuition Freeze Proposed in Nebraska
(KLZA) Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman plans to request an increase in state aid that would allow for a two-year tuition freeze at the University of Nebraska and the State College System.
Heineman made the announcement Monday that would allow the university and the colleges to hold tuition at the same rate during the next two academic years. ( play audio :20 seconds)
The Governor will propose to increase state funding to the four campuses of the University of Nebraska by 43 million dollars and to state colleges more than 4 million dollars. ( play audio :25 seconds )
State funding has been flat for several years. University of Nebraska President J-B Milliken says keeping state funding essentially flat would ultimately hurt the four-campus system. ( play audio :17 seconds )
Nebraska State College System Chancellor Stan Carpenter says the three state colleges including Peru State have attempted to keep tuition increases modest the past few years to maintain quality during difficult economic times. Carpenter says the tuition freeze will give students a break. ( play audio :26 seconds )
University of Nebraska students will save about $1,000 during the two years if the plan is approved.
