(KLZA) There were two meetings of the Falls City Council Monday night. The first to cover old business then a second to swear in new Council members elect Council leaders for the next year.
The old business portion of the meeting dealt with the trees on the terrace south of the Falls City Library and Arts Center along 14th Street. Councilman Don Ferguson said he felt cutting down the current trees was the best option to get rid of the bird dropping problems. ( play audio :30 seconds )
Ferguson said that next spring a decision can be made on what type of tree to put back in the area. ( play audio :10 seconds )
The vote to have the trees cut down was unanimous.
Monday nights meeting was the last one for 1st Ward Council member Hal Sutter and 2nd Ward Council member Mike Moore. Neither sought re-election in November.
Taking the oath of office Monday night was new 1st Ward Councilman Mike Dougherty and 2nd Ward Council person Angie Nolte. Also taking the oath were 3rd Ward Councilman Steve Scholl and 4th Ward Councilman Jim Wisdom, both having been re-elected in November.
Jerry Oliver was elected to another term as Council President and Steve Scholl was elected Acting President of the Council.
After voting 7-1 to suspend the first and second reading of the ordinance, with Dougherty casting the nay vote, the section of the ordinance that made for one way traffic and Stone Street and Chase Street in Falls City was repealed unanimously.
Two requests to rent Prichard Auditorium and serve alcohol were approved on 7-1 votes. The first for January 18th for the Community Medical Center Christmas party and the second request was for a Northwest Fight Club event on January 12th. Council member Judy Murphy cast the nay vote on both requests.
