Nebraska Opts for Federal Health Insurance Exchange
(KTNC) - Governor Dave Heineman has chosen to enroll Nebraska in a federally run health exchange program, saying a state-based option is too expensive and inflexible. Heineman announced that the state would opt for a federal exchange during a Capitol news conference on Thursday. (play audio :18 “the federal exchange.”)
Heineman says he was initially leaning toward a state-run exchange, but a budget review showed that a federal exchange was cheaper for state taxpayers in Nebraska.
The governor’s office projects that it would cost Nebraska 646-million dollars to create its own exchange, but only 176-million to pay for a federally run exchange. Heineman says several factors played a role in the decision. (play audio :23 “gonna do.”)
Heineman dismisses suggestions that opting for a federal exchange would reduce the state’s voice in deciding health care options for Nebraskans. (play audio :11 “much of a partnership.”)
The exchanges serve as a marketplace where individuals and small businesses can comparison shop for insurance. They're a key part of President Barack Obama's health care law, which Heineman opposes.
