Seneca Handicapped Parking Addressed

( KMZA )--Steps are bring taken to address handicapped parking concerns in downtown Seneca.

The Seneca City Council voted 3-2 Wednesday evening to erect signs designating handicapped parking spaces on Main Street to comply with ADA regulations.

Voting in favor were council members Steve Bennett, Galen Niehues and Bob Claas. Voting no were council members Jim Mitchell and Bruce Hermesch.

Claas brought up the issue last month, saying he had received complaints about some drivers parking in the spaces reserved for the handicapped, and urged the council to place signage designating the spaces.

Currently, the only marking for handicapped spaces is painted on the brick street surface.

In other business, the council approved an agreement with BG Consultants of Manhattan for bidding and construction engineering services for the Branch Street Extension/U.S. Highway 36 project at a fee not to exceed $181,420.

The project will provide access to the tracts on the former golf course property.

A proposal was accepted from Bartlett and West Engineering of Lawrence to provide land use and planning services for city owned property northeast of the Aquatic Park. The firm will perform the services for a total fee of $4,950. It was among two proposals received.
