(KNZA)--15-years in prison. That's the sentence handed down for a Costa Rican Hotel Security Guard convicted of the shooting death of McLouth High School student Justin Johnston.
Johnston was part of a nine-day Spanish Club trip when he was shot in June of last year.
The sentencing for the then 34-year old guard, working in Costa Rica illegally from Nicaragua, follows the September verdict handed down by a three judge panel in Costa Rica.
Justin and another student were walking back to the hotel, after curfew, and attempting to get in undetected, when the fatal shot was fired.
The security guard claims he thought the boys were criminals.
Along with the sentencing for the guard, the three-judge panel also found the hotel negligent, and, according to Fox 4 News, ordered a 646-thousand-dollar restitution payment to Johnston’s parents.
