( KNZA )--The Brown County Commission revisited, but made no decision Wednesday on whether to change their recent decision to only pay for an employee’s health insurance coverage for 2013 and not to fund any additional tiers--including family coverage.
Commissioner Keith Olsen said after research, he found that numerous counties offer only employee insurance. Olsen pointed out that each employee did receive a 50 cent an hour raise.
County Attorney Kevin Hill said the county will lose employees if the county declines to pay part of the employee’s family insurance. Hill said Nemaha County is the only area county who doesn’t pay part of the family coverage.
Sheriff John Merchant reiterated the concerns he voiced Monday, saying it will compromise his department and he will lose employees if the county doesn't change its decision.
The county is facing a 18 ½ percent premium increase from it’s health insurance provider for 2013.
Commissioner Warren Ploeger said the commission represents county employees as well as county taxpayers.
Hill discussed a proposal that would allow the employees to use their raise applied to the family insurance.
Commission Chairman Steve Roberts suggested tabling a decision and contacting the county auditor in regards to Hill’s proposal.
