Atchison Chamber Election Forum Monday
10/19/2012

(KAIR) -- Candidates in contested races for Atchison County and some state candidates will meet in Atchison Monday night for a political forum, hosted by the Atchison Chamber of Commerce.

Races featured on the county level will be for Register of Deeds, Third District Atchison County Commissioner and Atchison County Sheriff.

All candidates in those races will be in attendance except for one, Republican nominee for Register of Deeds, Shelley Campbell.

She’s declined attendance, citing a conflict of interest with the forum’s moderator, Benedictine College Political Science Chair John Settich, who is also serving as her Democratic opponent, Katie Vollmer’s Campaign Manager.

On the state level, the forum will feature candidates in the races for Kansas House 63 and Kansas Senate, District one.

Only the Democratic nominees, Jerry Henry and Steve Lukert, will be participating.

That’s because of the 10 debate criteria submitted to organizers by the Republican Debate Committee for recommendation of two of their candidates, Senator Dennis Pyle and Stephen Bodenhausen, to attend, was not met.

Chamber President and Event Organizer Jacque Pregont says they were standing firm on the rules and guidelines of their event.

The forum will take place at Atchison City Hall, beginning at seven that evening and will be broadcast live on local access television in Atchison.

Candidates will get to make an opening statement, an unlimited time to answer questions posed to them from various sources, including area media outlets and time for a closing statement.

The event is free and open to the public.
